Reflection on Research

Having completed the research phase for my short film package, I can now reflect on how these findings have shaped my creative trajectory. My research into Steve Cutts’ "Happiness," target audience psychographics, and representational theory has moved my project from a literal interpretation of phone addiction to a more sophisticated, symbolic critique of digital consumption.

1. Influences from Professional Practices

Analyzing Steve Cutts was a turning point for my project's Visual Style. Initially, I intended to use a realistic animation style; however, Cutts’ use of Satire and Anthropomorphism convinced me that exaggeration is a more effective tool for social critique.

  • The Takeaway: I have decided to adopt a "Neon-Noir" aesthetic. Like Cutts, I will use juxtaposed sound (happy music over dark imagery) to create a sense of irony, which I believe will engage my Gen-Z audience more effectively than a straightforward "preachy" tone.

2. Developing Brand Synergy

My research into Zootopia and professional film branding taught me that a media product is a "unified package."

  • The Lesson: Branding is about consistency in Media Language.

  • Implementation: This led me to develop a strict House Style early on. By selecting my primary typeface ([Insert Font Name]) and my "Blue Light" color palette during the research phase, I have ensured that my film poster and social media page will possess visual shorthand—allowing the audience to recognize the "brand" instantly across different platforms.

3. Reflecting on Audience and Representation

The most significant shift in my thinking came from my Audience Research.

  • The Revelation: My survey showed that my target demographic (Ages 16-25) felt "judged" by typical media representations of phone addiction.

  • The Adjustment: Consequently, I pivoted my Representational Strategy. Instead of representing the protagonist as "lazy," I am using Stuart Hall’s Theory to encode the character as a victim of "Persuasive Design." This move from a "judgmental" tone to an "empathetic" one is a direct result of my focus group feedback and is intended to increase audience identification.

4. Technical Skills and Planning

The research into Codes and Conventions of short films has streamlined my pre-production. I now understand that "less is more."

  • Editing: I have planned for Match-on-Action cuts that mimic the physical act of scrolling.

  • Sound: My "Sound Research" led me to experiment with Binaural Audio (3D sound), which I will use to make the notification pings feel like they are coming from "inside" the viewer's head, enhancing the immersive experience of the film.

Conclusion: Moving into Production

This research phase has provided me with a "Professional Blueprint." I am no longer just "making an animation"; I am constructing a Media Package designed to function in a real-world market. By applying the lessons of verisimilitude, synergy, and symbolic coding, I am confident that my major and ancillary tasks will work together to form a high-level, cohesive critique of the "infinite scroll."
