Critical Reflection

Image
Introduction My Advanced Portfolio is centered on a cross-media campaign for an animated short film titled "The Void," which investigates the phenomenon of phone addiction among contemporary youth . The project consists of a five-minute animation created in Adobe Animate, a minimalist promotional poster, and a comprehensive production blog that documents the creative journey. Together, these elements allow for an exploration of how temporal distortion, isolation, and digital stimuli can be represented visually and auditorily across different media platforms . By focusing on the "Everyman" experience of a student in Dubai, the project aims to serve as a visual synecdoche for a global generation trapped in a cycle of digital consumption. Representation The primary representation in "The Void" is constructed through the protagonist, Maya, an A-level student whose experience mirrors the target audience. Unlike traditional narrative protagonists, Maya is defi...

I designed the primary promotional poster using Negative Space to emphasize the protagonist's isolation. By utilizing Kinetic Iconography scattered around the character, I created a visual metaphor for 'digital noise.' The high-contrast black background serves as a Semiotic Link to 'The Void' sequence, ensuring visual continuity across all marketing materials.

Editing Progress

After weeks of battling with Adobe Animate, I’ve finally moved into the Post-Production phase. Editing a five-minute animation is a completely different beast compared to a live-action film; in animation, the "edit" happens mostly on the timeline before you even hit export. The "Pacing" Challenge One of my biggest concerns during the editing process was the narrative pacing . Maintaining audience engagement for 300 seconds with a single character is difficult. To solve this, I used the "Void" sequence as my primary editing tool. I spent a lot of time fine-tuning the velocity of the falling icons. I started with a slow, drifting motion to represent the initial "hook" of social media. I then increased the density and speed of the icons toward the middle of the film to create a sense of digital claustrophobia . Auditory Integration: The "Stream" Breakthrough The most critical part of this "editing" phase was the sound. I reali...

Filming process

Moving from the "perfect" planning phase to the actual production in Adobe Animate has been, quite honestly, the most challenging part of this entire A-level project. While my shot list and mood board were clear, translating those ideas into a functional 5-minute animation as a beginner was a massive wake-up call. What I thought would take a few days turned into 3 months of trial and error. The total filming period lasted from January to March. The Adobe Animate Learning Curve As a first-time user of professional animation software, the interface was incredibly daunting. I struggled significantly with Layer Hierarchy and the Timeline . Early on, I found myself accidentally drawing on the wrong layers or losing track of my Keyframes , which resulted in "ghosting" effects where assets would appear or disappear randomly. The biggest technical hurdle was the Classic Tween . I spent hours trying to make the app icons "rain" smoothly, only to realize that if t...
