Preliminary Task 2: postcard (final post & editing process)

As part of my A Level Media Studies coursework, I completed a preliminary exercise in designing a film poster using Adobe Photoshop. The goal of this task was to enhance my understanding of visual communication, layout design, and the conventions of film marketing materials. This exercise helped me develop both practical and analytical skills needed for the main production task later in the course.


Previously, for my foundation portfolio, we had not utilized Photoshop in any task. In class, we learned certain basic skills required for Photoshop. For my preliminary task, I have decided to design a poster to showcase the aesthetic for Billie Eilish's album: Happier Than Ever

According to the album cover and this sample aesthetic picture (from Pinterest), the album follows an extremely minimalist design and mostly beige and white colour palette is being used.

Research task: Genre

Last year, my team and I created a thriller short film opening that featured no violence and used limited props. This year, I decided to take a different approach by focusing on a more realistic topic. I wanted something that addresses a real-life issue and feels relatable to people my age. Initially, I planned to explore psychological problems like depression or anxiety. However, while drafting a brief plan, I realized the storyline felt predictable and too similar to many projects that had already been done. I then decided to stay within psychology but shift my focus to a different issue: social media and phone addiction. I also wanted to show how this addiction can connect to or even cause other psychological challenges. I found this topic especially engaging because it lets me address multiple psychological issues through a single, relatable problem.
